SALEM, Va. -- Three teams are still alive for the 2015 Mountain East Conference Softball Tournament title after Saturday's action at the Moyer Sports Complex.
West Virginia Wesleyan picked up wins over West Virginia State and Concord to advance to the championship game. Meanwhile, eighth-seeded Notre Dame College won three times on Saturday and will take on Concord on Sunday morning for the right to play the Bobcats for the championship.
Game 5: Shepherd 3, Wheeling Jesuit 0 | Box Score
Tara Hanson pitched a two-hit shutout to help lead Shepherd past Wheeling Jesuit, 3-0, in the first elimination game on Saturday morning.
Hanson went all seven innings striking out four and walking two. Alexandra Witt went 2-for-4 and Kass Taylor went 1-for-3 scoring both runs for SU while also driving in one for the Rams.
Angie Reddick and Victoria Scott had hits for Wheeling Jesuit as the Cardinals were eliminated. Mallory Chapman was saddled with the loss going the distance giving up three runs (one earned) striking out six and walking three.
Game 6: W.Va. Wesleyan 6, W.Va. State 0 | Box Score
West Virginia Wesleyan blanked West Virginia State, 6-0, in the first game of the winner’s bracket on Saturday.
The Bobcats got their second-straight shutout at the tournament behind Hannah Vet who allowed just five hits and struck out three with no walks. Brooklyn Waddell went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Anna Eggleston also went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Dee Dee Loftis went 2-for-3 for the Yellow Jackets. Chelsey Parkins took the loss giving up two runs on four hits. Calli Norton and Allyson Burgess pitched in relief for WVSU.
Game 7: Notre Dame 5, Fairmont State 2 | Box Score
Anissa Kotoch hit a three-run double in the top of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and lift Notre Dame to a 5-2 win over Fairmont State on Saturday afternoon.
Kotoch finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Kelsey Coleman went 3-for-3 at the top of the order and scored twice. Ashley Hall picked up the win in the circle giving up two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Sissy Stubbs went 3-for-4 and drove in FSU’s two runs. Sarah Parsons went 2-for-2 with a run.
Game 8: Concord 3, Charleston 0 | Box Score
Allie Reid pitched a three-hit shutout as Concord blanked Charleston, 3-0.
Reid pitched all seven innings striking out five and walking two. Alyssa Morris went 2-for-4 to help lead the CU offense.
The Mountain Lions scored all three unearned runs in the third inning. Lacey McDougall walked in a run, Kristen Rose followed with a sacrifice fly and Alycea Watson had an infield single to provide all the scoring necessary for Concord.
Courtney Fain took the loss lasting 2.2 innings giving up the three unearned runs on three hits. Jessie Rowe came on in relief and pitched the final 3.1 innings and giving up just two hits.
Game 9: Shepherd 12, Charleston 6 | Box Score
Shepherd exploded for six runs in the first inning on its way to a 12-6 win over Charleston. With the win, the eighth-seeded Rams eliminated the third-seeded Golden Eagles.
After building a six-run cushion in the first, the Rams led 7-2 midway through the fourth inning, but Charleston rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning to get to within one run. Shepherd responded with five more runs in the next half inning to help put the game out of reach.
Savannah Snyder paced Rams the offense going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Alexandra Witt and Tayler Schaefer each had two RBI, and Molly Staley went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
SU’s Tara Hanson went the distance allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
Rachelle Toppings and Ayla Santos led UC with two hits apiece, and Bethany Williams went 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Game 10: Notre Dame 8, W.Va. State 0 (5 innings) | Box Score
Notre Dame College eliminated a higher-seeded team for the second time on Saturday with an 8-0 win over West Virginia State on Saturday.
NDC, which came in seeded eighth, defeated sixth-seeded Fairmont State and the fifth-seeded Yellow Jackets in consecutive games.
The Falcons pounded out 10 hits in the five innings, including a perfect 3-for-3 performance from Nicole Spuhler and two hits from Kelsey Coleman. Anna Myers supplied a two-run single as a pinch hitter in the decisive fifth inning.
Ashley Hall needed little offensive support scattering five hits and striking out six without a walk.
Hannah Griffith went 3-for-3 for WVSU. Allyson Burgess took the loss giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits through 4.1 innings.
Game 11: W.Va. Wesleyan 5, Concord 2 | Box Score
Brooklyn Waddell went 2-for-4, including a two-run home run, to send West Virginia Wesleyan to the MEC championship game for the second-straight year.
Morgan Bruce went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Krista Waggoner added a pair of hits for the Bobcats. Hannah Vet went the distance in the circle giving up just two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Concord's first three hitters went 6-for-12, but the rest of the lineup managed just one hit. Alayna Furr, Alyssa Morris and Lauren Lewis each notched a pair of hits for the Mountain Lions. Lacey McDougall pitched all six innings giving up five runs on 10 hits.
Game 12: Notre Dame 3, Shepherd 1 | Box Score
Ashley Hall picked up her third win of the day after pitching Notre Dame past Shepherd, 3-1. Hall allowed just one run on three hits with five strikeouts and a walk in the win.
Maria Vanadia went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Kelsey Coleman hit a solo home run to lead the NDC offense.
Tara Hanson took the loss for Rams giving up three runs on six hits with a pair of walks. Courtney Clemons, Savannah Snyder and Tayler Schaefer each had hits for the Rams.
