Shepherd, WVWC Advance In MEC Women's Lax Semis

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.
-- Top-seeded Shepherd cruised to a 17-2 win over UVa-Wise, while West Virginia Wesleyan held off Wheeling Jesuit, 9-8, in the Mountain East Conference Tournament semifinals on Friday afternoon at Ram Stadium.

The Rams will take on the Bobcats for the MEC title on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ram Stadium.

Georgia Karr led the way for Shepherd scoring four goals and dishing out two assists. Erin Phelan netted three goals, Hunter Morris had two goals and two assists, and Brooke Hunley scored twice. 

Alyx Albano led the defense with three caused turnovers and two groundballs, and Haley Price came up with five groundballs and four draw controls.

Taylor Lawton had both goals for UVa-Wise in the loss. Rachel Cole had six draw controls and Mel Reilly made seven saves.

WVWC's Jessica Hardman scored four goals and one assist and as the Bobcats slowed down Wheeling Jesuit's attack to record an upset over the second-seeded Cardinals, 9-8. Two of Hardman's scores came in the second half, the last of which gave WVWC a three-goal lead with just over 11 minutes to play. 

The Cardinals were able to pull to within one after a pair of goals from Olivia Krock, but WJU had three turnovers in the final minutes of the game trying to get the equalizer. The Cards had a final chance in the waning seconds, but Jessie Tufnell's shot hit the post and her rebound attempt went high as time expired. 

Natalie Schaffner added three goals to aid the WVWC offense. Ashely Duncan caused six turnovers and had 12 groundballs. Lexi Swisher made eight saves. 

Tufnell was limited to one goal and two assists on the night. WJU got three goals from Elizabeth Hales, and two each from Krock and Paige Plesich. Lydnsay Carpenter had five groundballs and Maire Austin made eight saves.
