MEC Announces Men's Tennis Awards

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- West Virginia Wesleyan's Joel Izquierdo is the Mountain East Conference Player of the Year, UVa-Wise's Andrii Rutnytskyi is the league's Freshman of the Year, and West Liberty head coach Sam McCullough is the Coach of the Year, the league announced today.

Izquierdo, a senior from Lleida, Spain, went unbeaten in MEC play at No. 1 singles this spring. Additionally, he's compiled an 11-5 overall record in singles and has gone 16-9 in doubles with teammate Aitor Reparaz. The two won the ITA Regional doubles championship last fall and were ranked eighth in the country.

Rutnytskyi, a freshman from Odessa, Ukraine, manned the No. 1 spot in singles and played No. 1 doubles this season for the Cavs. He went 3-4 overall in singles, losing a pair of matches in super tie-breakers.

McCullough, in his 11th season at the helm, captured his first regular-season conference championship this season leading the Hilltoppers to a perfect 7-0 conference mark. WLU is also currently ranked second in the NCAA Atlantic Region and the top seed at this week's MEC Tournament.

The All-MEC teams and awards are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.
