SALEM, Va. -- UVa-Wise captured the 2014 Mountain East Conference Tournament championship with a 6-2 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at the Moyer Complex.
Freshman Taylor Brandts (22-2), the MEC Tournament MVP, picked up her third win of the tournament after pitching a complete game. She allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and struck out four with one walk. She was joined on the MEC All-Tournament team by teammates Christina Ziemba and Rachel Fischer.
Megan Malenstyn led the WVWC offense with two hits and two RBI. Alex Furr collected two hits at the top of the order for the Bobcats.
After the two teams went 11 scoreless innings a night ago, it didn't take long both teams to get on the board. WVWC scored first as Furr crossed the plate on a Malenstyn fielder's choice. The Cavs responded in a big way in the bottom of the inning with four runs, punctuated by Megan Dillon's three-run home run.
UVa-Wise added an unearned run in the fourth, but WVWC stayed within striking distance with a run of its own in the fifth. The Cavs tacked on another in the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats mounted a bit of a rally in their last at-bat, but stranded runners on first and second as Malenstyn's deep fly ball was handled by Ziemba to end the game.
