MEC Softball Tournament -- Day 1 Roundup

G1: Concord 8, Glenville State 7 | Box Score

A five-run fourth inning propelled the Concord University softball team to a win against Glenville State, 8-7, in the first round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at the Moyer Sports Complex.

Alyssa Morris went 3-for-4 to pace the Mountain Lions, while Carly DiVirgilio and Brantlea Wood each drove in two. 

Trailing 8-5 in the top of the seventh, Kayleigh Huck hit a two-run home run with two outs to cut it just to one. However, Allie Reid was able to get the final out to complete the victory.


G2: Urbana 11, West Liberty 3 (6 inn) | Box Score

Urbana scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away from West Liberty, 11-3, in the first round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at the Moyer Sports Complex.

UU plated three in the bottom of the first, but West Liberty tied it up in the top of the next inning with three earned runs. Morgan Haer belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to give the Blue Knights the lead for good.

Heather Martin added three RBI for Urbana in the win, and Katelyn Edwards added two hits and two RBI. 

Jenn Young went 3-for-3 for the Hilltoppers.

G3: Notre Dame 8, Wheeling Jesuit 0 (6 inn) | Box Score

Notre Dame's Kelsey Coleman and Rachelle Miller each had three hits to help lead Notre Dame to a 8-0 win over Wheeling Jesuit in the first round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at the Moyer Sports Complex.

Leading 2-0, Notre Dame scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to help break the game open. That was more than enough for starter Ashley Hall who pitched a complete game shutout scattering six seven hits in six innings and stranding 11 WJU runners.

Rachel Conrad provided two hits for Wheeling Jesuit in the loss.

G4: West Virginia State 6, Shepherd 3 | Box Score

West Virginia State plated four runs in the bottom of the third inning and then held off Shepherd to defeat the Rams 6-3 in the first round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at the Moyer Sports Complex.

Tied at 0-0, WVSU got a two-run single from Alana Weyent and then a two-run double from Sydney Kaplan to take control of the game. Shepherd answered with a run in the fourth, only to see the Yellow Jackets push across one of its own in the bottom of that inning. 

Alexandra Witt and Kass Taylor hit solo home runs for the Rams in the top half of the inning, but couldn't keep WVSU off the board as Kaplan added a home run of her own in the bottom of the inning for the final 6-3 score.

Anna Eggleston went the distance for WVSU allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. SU's Tara Hanson took the loss giving up six runs (five earned) on 12 hits. 

G5: West Virginia Wesleyan 10, Concord 6 | Box Score

Top-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back in a 10-6 win over Concord on the first day of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at the Moyer Sports Complex.

Concord was plagued by four errors that led to eight unearned runs for the Bobcats.

Alex Furr paced the Bobcat offense going 3-for-4 and scoring three times, and Megan Malenstyn drove in three. Freshman Olivia Gore added two hits and two RBI. Starter Jacqui Omichinski got the win in the circle giving up six runs (three earned) on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts in six innings of work.

Concord's Kristen Rose went 2-for-4 and scored twice. Brantlea Wood took the lost lasting just 2/3 an inning giving up five runs (none earned) on three hits. Allie Reid came on in relief and gave up five runs in 4.1 winnings of action. 


G6: Urbana 3, Charleston 2 | Box Score

Urbana pulled the first upset of the Mountain East Conference Tournament defeating Charleston, 3-2, on the first day of action at the Mountain East Conference Tournament.

The game was knotted at 0-0 until the fifth inning when Courtney Stewart put the Blue Knights on the board with a two-run single to left field. Urbana tacked on another in the sixth to go ahead 3-0.

Charleston rallied in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs provided by RBI hits from Andrea Hayes and Bethany Cera. Urbana's Lauren Anderson, who pitched the first five innings, came back into the game in the seventh to shut the door and secure the win for the Blue Knights.

G7: Notre Dame 6, Fairmont State 4 | Box Score

Kelsey Coleman's grand slam home run in the sixth inning sparked Notre Dame to a 6-4 win over Fairmont State on the first day of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at the Moyer Sports Complex.

Notre Dame grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first, but a two-run homer from Sissy Stubbs in the fourth put Fairmont State back ahead. FSU pushed another run across to make it 3-1 after five innings. Coleman then provided her heroics with a grand slam that put NDC up for good.

Coleman finished 2-for-4 with four RBI, and Maria Vanadia went 3-for-4. Ashley Hall went the distance in the circle giving up four runs on 10 hits.

Fairmont State got two hits apiece from Ericka Aversa, Carly Mundie, Nikki Nuzum and Ryne Hill. Nuzum took the loss giving up 6 runs on 13 hits. 

G8: UVa-Wise 3, West Virginia State 2 | Box Score

UVa-Wise downed West Virginia State, 3-2, on the first day of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at the Moyer Sports Complex.

Trailing 1-0 after a home run by Alana Weyent, UVa-Wise rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 3-1. Mindy Combs' two-run single helped spark the Cavs rally.

WVSU pulled a run back in the top of the sixth, and then had runners at second and third with no outs, but UVa-Wise's Taylor Brandts got the next three outs to halt the Yellow Jacket rally. Brandts got the win going all seven innings allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

Anna Eggleston went 2-for-3 at the plate and pitched all six innings for WVSU. In the circle she gave up three runs on six hits.
