News & Notes
• This will mark the first week in MEC history that two teams from the league are nationally ranked in both major polls (AFCA/d2football.com) with Shepherd (9th/10th) and Concord  (23rd/21st) making it in the top 25.
• Four different MEC quarterbacks have two 300+ yard passing games this season: Cooper Hibbs (FSU), Jeremy Musselman (WVWC), Brian Novak (CU) and Ray Russ (NDC). Six different QBs have thrown for over 300 yards this year.
• Three running backs in the league are averaging over 100 yards per game with Rahmann Lee leading the way with 128.2 yards per game, followed by Calvinaugh Jones (121.4) and Marvin Elam (107.6).
• Shepherd is 14-0 in two seasons of play in the Mountain East Conference.
• SU quarterback Jeff Ziemba has yet to throw an interception in 107 attempts. The Rams are one of just four teams not to throw an interception this season.
• Shepherd is 19-of-23 (83 percent) in third down situations of less than four yards.
• The Rams lead the country in total defense allowing just 156.4 yards per game. SU has allowed more than 10 points in just two of its five games this season.
• Shepherd’s C.J. Davis is the only MEC player to earn Defensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week honors this season. He leads the Rams with 412 all-purpose yards despite not playing any snaps on offense.
• SU is out-scoring opponents 127-17 in the first half and has yet to allow a point in the third quarter this season.
• Concord is one of only five teams in NCAA Division II to average more than 50 points a game this season.
• CU’s Ryan Stewart has at least one touchdown reception in each of his last four games. He has been on the receiving end of nine of Brian Novak’s 14 TD tosses.
• Concord’s offensive line has allowed only three sacks in 143 passing attempts.
• CU uses team defense with six players recording over 20 total tackles this year and 13 players have at least one tackle for a loss.
• Charleston’s defense held Shepherd to under 100 yards rushing for the first time in 28 games. Prior to week five’s game against UC that saw Shepherd rush for 83 yards, the last time it was held to under 100 was the first week of the 2012 season against Shippensburg.
• UC’s Torie Wagner became the school’s single-season leader for punt return yards against Shepherd. He has 197 punt return yards on 12 attempts and one touchdown. Wagner also ranks sixth in the country in combined kick and punt return yardage with 505.
• Wagner is averaging over 107.6 all-purpose yards per game (10th in the league) despite not playing on offense.
• Notre Dame’s Ray Russ went 121 pass attempts without being intercepted before surrendering one in week four against Charleston, establishing a new league mark.
• Russ leads the MEC with 15 touchdown passes this year. He has thrown at least two touchdown passes in every game this season.
• 26 of Mitchel Shegos’ 35 receptions have gone for first downs.
• West Liberty continues to lead the league in fewest penalties (14) and penalty yardage (150).
• West Virginia Wesleyan is 0-2 in games that it rushes for less than 100 yards.
• Tyler Bolen played well in relief of an injured Jeremy Musselman last week in a narrow 38-35 win over Glenville State. He was 18-of-25 for 187 yards with two scores and no interceptions.
• Fairmont State’s Fabian Guerra made national headlines with his acrobatic one-handed catch against Concord. The clip went viral on social media and was aired on ESPN’s SportsCenter and the NFL Network’s show “Total Access.”
• Guerra was not just a one-handed wonder, though, finishing the game against Concord with 12 catches for 136 yards. He leads the league in in receptions per game (7.8) and is the only wide receiver in the league to average more than 100 yards receiving per game (109.0)
• Austin White became the first Falcon to rush for over 100 yards in a game with 108 last week against Concord.
• GSC’s Rahmann Lee ranks third among active players in all-purpose yards per game (153.89), sixth in rushing yards per game (126.1) and fifth for rushing yards (3,405).
• Each of Glenville State’s last four games have been decided by four points or less. The Pioneers are 1-3 in those games.
• GSC quarterback Sean Steele has already thrown more touchdown passes this season (10) than he did all of last season (seven).
• West Virginia State picked up its first MEC win and first league road win in the same week. It was the first road win for coach Jon Anderson.
• WVSU’s Tevin Brown accounts for 54 percent of the team’s rushing yards this season.
• WVSU’s Kevin Coffie had five pass breakups heading into last week’s game against Urbana where he notched six against the Blue Knights.
• UU’s D’Gary Wallace is the only player in the league to average more than 10 total tackles per game with 11.2. He also leads the conference in total solo tackles with 31.
• Urbana quarterback Cale Burdyshaw is the only Blue Knight player to rush for over 100 yards in a game this season.
• UVa-Wise’s Zack Blair leads the Mountain East Conference with 11.5 tackles for a loss (2.30 per game).
• Cavs punter Trent Martin has six punts of over 50 yards this season.
