WVSU Edges Charleston For MEC Women's Tennis Title

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Top-seeded West Virginia State nipped third-seeded Charleston, 5-4, to claim the 2014 Mountain East Conference Women's Tennis Tournament title.

The Yellow Jackets were on the winning side of several close matches, including No. 3 doubles where Brenda Cumpa and Charlotte Sandy won in a tiebreaker to give WVSU a 2-1 edge after doubles.

Brittany Franco picked up her second win of the day with a victory at No. 1 singles, and Cumpa added a win at No. 6 singles. UC's Kelsey Hensley, Ana Pena and Jackie Backos won at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles to set up a decisive match at No. 4 singles. West Virginia State's Nina Dillwald dropped the first set, but rallied for a narrow 7-5 win in the second set and then a 6-4 win in the third to secure the title for the Yellow Jackets.
