CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia Wesleyan and the University of Charleston picked up wins on the first day of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at Schoenbaum Tennis Courts.

In the first quarterfinal, fifth-seeded Bobcats defeated fourth-seeded UVa-Wise, 5-1. Sarah Cameron had wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles to lead WVWC. Paula Pimenta defeated Daria Tyschenko at No. 1 singles, and Julia Uchoa added a win over Haley Thacker at No. 2 singles. Allene Connor and Kasumi Hayashi recorded a win at No. 3 doubles for the Bobcats.

WVWC advances to take on top-seeded West Virginia State at 11 a.m.

Third-seeded Charleston swept past Shepherd, 5-0, in the other quarterfinal. The Golden Eagles lost just three games in three doubles matches, and then Jackie Backos and Taylor Todd won their No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches, respectively, to close out the Rams.

UC advances to take on second-seeded West Liberty at 2 p.m.
